Rick Skinner joined the United Way of Greater St. Louis as Director of the Volunteer Center in March of 1999 and was promoted to Vice President of the Volunteer Center in 2005.
He is responsible for the daily operations of a number of United Way programs within the United Way’s Community Investment Division including:
Days of Caring (a year-round volunteer mobilization effort connecting company volunteers to United Way Agency projects)
St. Louis Cares (a program designed for busy individuals and family members who want to strengthen the community through participation in short term episodic volunteer projects)
BoardLink StL (a new community collaborative that utilizes state-of-the-art technology and readiness training to link diverse leaders to opportunities to serve on non profit boards and committees in the region)
United Way Campaign Services (which schedules trained speakers to deliver presentations and tours during the annual United Way Campaign).
The Volunteer Center offers Volunteer Program Certification to agencies that meet nationally recognized standards that are critical to effective volunteer management practices. The Center also offers an annual series of workshops to strengthen volunteer management programs throughout the community.
From 1991 to 1999, Rick was Associate Director of Development and Volunteer Services Coordinator at the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater St. Louis. He has also served as Community Relations Coordinator at the Epilepsy Foundation in St. Louis from 1985 to 1991.
Rick recently was appointed as Chair of the United Way of America Advisory Team for the Points of Light Foundation in Washington D.C. His duties includes serving the needs of volunteer centers across the country and their role in United Way’s national community impact initiative. Rick also serves on the Board of the St. Louis Council of Directors of Volunteer Services and is Co-President of the Corporate Volunteer Council of Greater St. Louis.
Rick received a Bachelor of Journalism Degree with an emphasis in advertising, marketing and promotions from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism in 1985 where he received one of ten national scholarships for journalism excellence. Rick has also worked with his mentor, “Chicken Soup for the Soul” best-selling author and motivational speaker Jack Canfield, for over a decade. And, in his spare time, Rick is a professional disk jockey and was a radio personality in his teenage years.
